In Case You Missed It

Last week's presenter was John Schwandke. John's program covered his involvement with the Rotary World Services Committee and their goal of "People Meeting People" and doing good things together.  Through his video montage, members got a first-hand look at a number of projects our District participated in both in Xicotepec, Mexico and South Africa.  In Xicotepec, projects included stabilizing electrical voltage and installing a purification drinking water system at Hogar Victoria Orphanage, building improvements at Xicotepec Red Cross, and purchasing band instruments for a secondary school.  These projects were financed through a mixture of funding sources including private donations from club members, students, the Muscatine Rotary Club's allocation of $6,000, which qualified for "matching grant"

money from District 6000, and the Rotary Foundation. John stressed the importance of each of us contributing to the Paul Harris Sustaining Fund so we can have the resources to continue to expand the horizons for others.

 

Following John's presentation, Rich Dwyer, Co-Chair of the Muscatine Rotary Foundation Committee and Mike and JoAnn Ruby, Bequest Society members, came forward to recognize John and Darlene for becoming the newest members from our club to join the Bequest Society.  Membership in the Bequest Society is attained by allocating a minimum of $10,000 in your will or estate to The Foundation.  Members may also make a Benefactor Gift Commitment by notifying the Foundation in writing that he or she has made a provision in their will or estate plan naming the Foundation's Permanent Fund as a beneficiary or by making an outright gift of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation Permanent Fund.

·         Interact News from Stephanie Nagy

 

Here is the info for Fall Yard Cleanup:

 

For another amazing year, Interact is sending students to Xicotepec, Mexico. They will be volunteering in the community for a week. It costs a student $1000 to go on the life changing trip, and signing up for our fundraiser would be greatly appreciated.

2-4 students will rake your yard and do other yard work for 3 hours for a donation of $40.

Dates to sign up: November 14, 15, 16, and 22, 23

Time slots: 9am-12 or 1pm-4

You do not need to be present.

In September we participated in the United Way Day of Caring. This Wednesday we picked up garbage on a two mile stretch on Highway 22 towards Nichols. In November we are participating in Operation Christmas Child. Shoe boxes are filled with toys for a boy or girl in the age group of your choice. The boxes are sent around the world to children in need. We are having a competition at the high school between homeroom for who can bring the most shoe boxes filled with toys.

October 27th Happy News

·          P.J. Stamler made contributions in appreciation for his 17 grandchildren, his wife's improved health, and his son, Paul III's recovery from a life-threatening health issue.

·         Keith Porter made a contribution because he had done a Rotary meeting makeup in Washington, D. C. and is appreciative of being part of the Rotary organization.
