THE OTHER BIG STORY Interact Fundraiser Rotary Interact Students from Muscatine High School are trying to raise money for their projects though yard work. If you have a yard to mow etc., and need a little help, Interact will pitch in and help for $40 per yard. They're available on November 17 and 18. They'll work from 9 until noon and from one until three. Call Serena Everhart at 563-260-1430 to learn more. LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM: What a terrific and information-packed program from Saul Solomon, Chairman, CEO and President of Bridgestone Bandag, LLC! Bridgestone takes its name from the translation of the founder's name (which was "stone bridge" in Japanese). The company was started in 1931 and derives about 75% of its revenues from auto tires. The balance in from other products made from rubber. The Bridgestone brand is accepted as the leader in formula racing in Europe. Here in America, Bridgeston's Firestone brand is the leader in Indy 500-type racing. Much to Saul's chagrin, the Goodyear brand is the leader in the Nascar market. Bridgestone is trying to establish stronger brand recognition through its designation as the official tire of the NFL. Bridgestone acquired Bandag for its global leadership in the important retread side of the business. Bandag is a super-efficient company from the standpoint of R & D and is well respected. The marriage of Brigestone's R & D for tread design and Bandag's efficiency in manufacturing and marketing will present serious competition to Goodyear, Cooper, and Michelin. What does the future hold for Bandag in Muscatine? Basically, Saul said the Bridgestone approach is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." They see a long and prosperous role in Muscatine's manufacturing activities. TODAY'S PROGRAM We will hear about the latest at the Salvation Army.This meeting will be at the Salvation Army. Hope you read it last weekend Rotary Moment -Today's Rotary Moment - The Rotary Wheel contains six spokes, 24 teeth and a keyway which locks a wheel to a hub thus making it a worker and not an idler. It symbolizes action and a million members working together to make the world a better place. It also allows a fellow Rotarian to identify each other and silently inform the general public "I AM A ROTARIAN." Happy News Kip Fisher - was certainly tickled about his alma mater winning a football game - again. Carlin Lawhead - was just glad all over. He was happy about the Hawkeyes and about Peggy Whitson, the Iowan who graduated from Carlin's high school alma mater in Mt. Ayr, piloting the space shuttle. Dave Utley - was just tickled pink that Iowa won again. New Members Bill Weigel (sponsored by Dennis McDonald) the new Vice Presidentand senior trust officer at Central State Bank.
