In Case You Missed It

Last week's presenters were Sarah Gross and Taylor Fountain, educators at MHS, on Project Lead the Way.  Project Lead the Way focuses on teaching high school students about Engineering in a hands-on and project-based model.  This national project gets students interested in technology and engineering to help forge the next generation of Engineers.  The three classes that are offered at MHS are Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, and Civil Engineering and Architecture.  These courses allow students to get exposure to the different types of engineering and apply their math and science skills.  Across the country over 3,000 schools are involved in this program.  The students who participate also gain college credit at the University of Iowa, Iowa State, and MCC.  Sarah and Taylor hope to grow the number of classes being offered in the future.  To learn more about Project Lead the Way visit their website at www.pltw.org.

 

Special Recognition: Floyd Scott, Member of Rotary Foundation Bequest Society

  • Mike Ruby presented the family of long-time Rotarian, Floyd Scott, with a certificate from Rotary International and our Club's deepest thanks for Floyd's generosity.  Floyd passed away on August 12, 2008 and left a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.  Floyd became an honorary Paul Harris Fellow in 1984 and was the pianist for our Club for quite sometime.  Carol Duffy and Jan Stoltenberg, Floyd's daughters, shared touching words on Floyd's fondness of Rotary and the friendships he had within the Club.   

 

March 9th Club Announcements

  • Caren Luke invited everyone to the Businessperson's Tea on Friday, March 27th from 4:00-5:15 p.m. at the Stanley Auditorium.  Russ Caroll, Dave Ramsey's top Financial Counselor and #1 right hand man, will be talking to you about the impact of employee personal financial problems on your business.  To attend please RSVP to Caren at clluke@machlink.com.  This event is being brought to you by the Financial Literacy Coalition.
  • Please welcome new member Zach Klipsch, Executive Director of Camp Abe Lincoln.  Zach is a former member of the North Scott Rotary Club.  Please help us welcome Zach to our Club!
  • Please welcome new member Doug Schnoebelen.  Doug is employed with the University of Iowa and works with the Lucille A. Carver Mississippi Riverside Environmental Research Station (LACMRERS).  Please help us welcome Doug to Rotary!
  • Sharon Gibson Ellis-Membership Committee will host two 7:30 a.m. meetings every month at Snackers to serve as make up opportunities for those who have missed a meeting.  The first opportunity will be on March 17th.  All are welcome even if you do not have a meeting to make up for!
