In Case You Missed It

Our presentation on Monday was given by Dr.P. Barry Butler, Dean of College of Engineering for University of Iowa. Barry spoke in great detail about the future of wind energy in Iowa.  Barry shared with us that Iowa is ranked #2 in the United States for wind power with northwest Iowa being the prime area.  We most often see wind turbines in northwest Iowa which are about 250 feet tall.  By 2030 the Department of Energy will require 20% of all electricity to be created by renewable resources.  Due to this requirement, Barry believes that Iowa will likely become the center for production and research on wind energy and turbines.  To learn more about wind energy and Barry's work please visit http://www.iawind.org/.

  • Congratulations to Bill Trent and Dennis McDonald for being sustainable Paul Harris Fellows.  Bill and Dennis received their two sapphire pin.  Thank you Bill and Dennis for your support!
  • Please remember to put a check next to your name when you come to Rotary for attendance tracking.  A sign in sheet will be located next to the badges on the front table.  Thank you!
  • First reading for membership for proposed members Sean Stewart and Jeff Armstrong.  If you have any concerns about these proposed members please speak to a Board member.
  • Please look at the committee assignment roster at your table to confirm your interest.  If you would like to make a change in the committee you are on please speak with Mary.
  • Our goals for this year are based upon the planning session we held at our regular meeting in early June:

1.  Increase membership in our Rotary Club.

2.  Support and implement meaningful hands on local and worldwide projects.   

3.  Engage our membership through our website and create opportunities for fellowship and networking.

4.  Communicate our club goals and activities to attract new members and share Rotary's worth in Muscatine .

  • YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SOUGHT FOR ROTARY
    GOODWILL EXCHANGE TO AUSTRALIA

    Iowa Rotarians seek four outstanding young professionals, ages 25-40, to be part of a Group Study Exchange to Australia from Feb. 26 to March 26, 2010.

    Rotary District 6000 will send a team of four non-Rotarians, plus a Rotarian team leader, to a district in southeast Australia. The purpose of GSE is to promote international understanding and goodwill through person-to-person contact. While abroad, team members stay in Rotarians' homes, give presentations, meet their professional counterparts, and experience the host country's customs, vocations and lifestyles.

    Our selection committee is looking for exemplary ambassadors of their country, state and profession. Team members should have strong communication skills, experience working in a team and ability to cope in an unfamiliar environment over 30 often arduous days. International travel experience is a plus.

    Here are answers to basic questions about the exchange:

    WHO'S ELIGIBLE? Participants must be employed full-time in a recognized business or profession, and live or be employed in Rotary District 6000, which comprises most of the southern Iowa south of Highway 30, including Ames, Marshalltown and Clinton (but not Cedar Rapids).

    WHERE'S THE EXCHANGE? Team members will travel to District 9790 near Melbourne (portions of eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales). For more information on the district, see     www.rotary9790.org.au

    WHO PAYS FOR THE TRIP? The Rotary International Foundation provides a round-trip air ticket, and local Rotarians in the host communities provide meals, lodging and group travel. Team members pay for personal and incidental expenses, including passports.

    HOW DO I APPLY? Applications are available from a local Rotary Club president; the GSE outbound committee chairman Lynn Hicks, (515) 556-0747 or lynhyx@gmail; or the Rotary web page at     www.rotary6000.org (Look under "Foundation'' and "Group Study Exchange") Completed applications must be endorsed by the sponsoring clubs and submitted to Hicks by Aug. 14, 2009. All applicants must be available for an interview on the weekend of Aug. 29-30 to qualify for this award.

    WHO LEADS THE TRIP? Rita Perea of the Greater Des Moines Emerging Leaders Rotary Club was chosen as team leader. She will assist in the selection and preparation of team members.
