January 21 - Return visit of Bill Aossey of Cedar Rapids (he was Bill Housh's guest a couple of months back but the meeting was so loaded with other business that he didn't have a chance to speak much. January 28 - Jan Glendening, Director of Philanthropy, the Nature Conservancy regarding the introduction of bison into the prairies of Iowa. GUESTS Lum, and Maria. SONG LEADERS Paul Kraushaar lead us in the chorus of " Jingle Bells" January- Bill Trent February - Carlin Lawhead March - Ann Meeker April - Diana Gradert May - Norm Smith June - Harvey Allbee, Jr. MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF You all received a letter from Rich Dwyer and Charlie Lewis asking for your help in the further eradication of polio. As indicated in the letter, the Rotary Foundation has issued a challenge for all of us to give additional dollars to assist in this much needed effort. You are being asked to give $100.00 if you joined Rotary after July 1, 2003 and $50.00 for all other members. The Rotary Foundation is matching contributions with $.50 for each dollar contributed. District 6000 declared they will contribute $1.00 of our District Designated Funds for each dollar contributed by our club and club members up to the first $10,000 of contributions. At our Rotary Board meeting on Wednesday, the Board approved contributing $10.00 for each of our members. Tis the season for giving, so find that letter from your Foundation Committee and let's all give to this very worthwhile cause. We currently have 132 active members in our Club with an induction of two new members, Jill Kordick and Lynn Schultz scheduled for January 7. If you think someone you know would make a good Rotarian talk to them about it and ask them to join Rotary. Just think how we could grow our club membership if each of us just brought on one new member in the next couple of years. Sounds pretty simple doesn't it? I'd also like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! HAPPY NEWS Bev White was happy to be with us again. We were happy to have Bev White with us also. TODAY'S ROTARY MOMENT Rotary Moment - A skeptic might ask: "How can Rotary be a real force for peace? It has no jurisdictional power. It is not a religion. It has no army or tanks and it insists on being non political. Rotary has always approached peacemaking systematically - it has sought to break down the barriers that cause people to point fingers at one another. By trying to understand people's point of view and reaching across lines of race, religion, and culture to become partners in service to all mankind, tensions are reduced and friendships are increased. Humanitarian aid has been Rotary's answer to hunger, sickness, illiteracy, and economic disaster, the seeds of conflict.
