In Case You Missed It

Last week's presenter was Dr. Jeff Armstrong, of Muscatine Community College, on the MCC - India exchange program.  Jeff, who has visited India over 16 times, has created a lasting partnership with Stella Maris College in Chennai, India.  This program focuses on connecting students from MCC with students in India to discuss topics such as Contemporary World Issues, Outsourcing, Climate Change, Family Structure, and Terrorism.  These students connect via web-based communication tools, such as blogs, instant messaging, web-cam, etc.   All material is taught and discussed in English, which is the common language in India.

 

February 2nd Club Announcements

February 2nd Happy News

·         Sarah Lande enjoyed visiting with 4th graders about their dictionaries Rotary purchased for their use.  She also complemented the Art Center and Musser Public Library on the nice brochure she received.

·         Bill Phelan is happy that the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce has completed their move to 209 Walnut St.

We are the co-chairs of the United Way's  "Let's Talk" Culture of Poverty Affinity group and are sending you this invitation because we want to share an experience with you. This experience will simulate daily life of a person living in poverty.

 

On February 26, 2009 during the evening from 5:00 PM - 8:30 PM, members of the Culture of Poverty Affinity group and staff from the Iowa State Extension Office in Muscatine will provide a participatory simulation of life in poverty. This simulation will place you and other Muscatine community members in real life situations which you, as a "member of a family" will be challenged to navigate.

During the simulation you will be asked to "make do" with the public assistance that would typically be provided to a family on welfare.

 

Because we are committed to changing the lives of our community members who live in poverty, we feel that the community as a whole must first understand the realities of poverty. You will find this to be a life-enhancing exercise that will impact you personally as you better understand others in our community. We encourage you and challenge you to join us on the evening of February 26th.

Soup and Sandwiches will be served

Simulation will begin at 5:30 PM
