Week of February 8,
2010
Today's Program: SSAB Iowa R&D Center Rick Bodnar
In Case You Missed It
Monday's presentation was given by
Gage Huston on the Muscatine Bridge Tribute Plaza. The Bridge Tribute Plaza was started as a Leadership
Muscatine project in 2006 and is a tribute to the old High Bridge and the Nobert
F. Beckey Bridge. The Plaza's design
allows for reflection of both bridges with separate sitting areas that overlook
the current bridge and where the High bridge was. The materials and design of the Plaza are consistent
with other current riverfront attractions to ensure the area will have a
unified theme. Steve Boka helped secured
a grant from the Iowa DOT, under National Scenic Byways funding, for 80% of the
cost of the Plaza. Gary Wieskamp and
Gary Carlson learned about this project at a CIAT meeting and introduced the
project to Rotary. Rotary graciously agreed
to raise $20,000 for the project. With
nearly all of the funding secured construction for the Bridge Tribute Plaza
started in the fall of 2009. Today, the
Plaza is nearly 80% complete and will be finished in the Spring. Rotary and other supporters will be
recognized for their contributions with a donor placard at the center of the
Plaza. At the conclusion of the
presentation, Gage, Mayor Dick O'Brien, Steve Boka, and Gregg Mandsager were
presented with a check from Rotary for $20,000.
Details about a dedication ceremony will be coming soon! Thank you Rotarians for your support of the
Muscatine Bridge Tribute Plaza!
