THE BIG STORY: President-elect of Rotary International Dong-Kurn (D.K.) Lee will be the featured speaker at The Outing Club on September 10, The event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Davenport #34 and will be at noon. Meal cost is $15 per person. We will have our regular meeting on that day.
THE OTHER BIG STORY: Kaltrina and Nita, our Rotary Exchange Students fro Kosovo are going through the last stages of their visa approval which will enable them to return to Muscatine to attend MCC. Last Spring we asked for pledges to support the girls in regard to their tuition and books.
They still need another $1300 to cover their housing costs. Want to help? Please contact Sarah Lande, Soctt Natvig or Mary Wildermuth with your questions. Make checks payable to MCC.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM:
Adrian E. LaTrace, Vice President, Manufacturing of Acciona Energy North America. - New wind generation turbine company. Acciona has a wind turbine assembly plant in West Branch. Adrian will talk about his company and its place in the American energy independence movement.

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM:
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Diana Broderson, Family Program Services Program Director, Muscatine Community Y presented information on this growing trend. In Muscatine, 502 households with grandparents raising grandchildren have registered with the Department of
Services or the Muscatine County Community Services. This figure does NOT include the unknown number of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren outside of "the system." Grandparents wind up raising grandchildren because the responsible parents are in jail or prison, incapacitated by drugs or alcohol, unwilling or unable to earn a sufficient living to support their own children, have run away, are mentally incapable of caring for their own children because of mental illness or retardation, or have simply abandoned their children. Nobody in the room voiced concern about the statistic.
ROTARY MOMENT:
Although Rotary's early focus was on fellowship and business networking, members soon incorporated the element of service. In 1906, Donald M. Carter proposed an amendment to the club bylaws: "An organization that is wholly selfish cannot last long. If we as a Rotary Cluib expect to survive and grow, we must do some things to justify our existence. We must perform a civic service."

Roger and Sarah Lande Were happy to tell us about a fortnight in Normandy. They toured the beaches of D-Day. Very moving. Very proud moment.
Mike Ruby Has published the District 6000 Membership Guide. We received an extra copy.
Bob Lande is happy to be back from RAGBRAI. He said Jim Nepple paced him all the way. They had different billets along the way.
