Governor, District 6000: Diana Reed, Des Moines, Iowa.
Rotary International President: Wilfrid J. Wilkinson, Trenton, Ontario, Canada.
THE BIG STORY: Diana Reed, our District Governor will be coming to Muscatine October 1, 2007. This should be a great meeting. THE OTHER BIG STORY: Three Rotarians achieved Sustaining Paul Harris Fellowships last week: Sr. Irma Ries,
Paul Carroll, and
Frank Kelly. An anonymous donor gave the money to the Rotary Foundation in the names of these Rotarians because of their community service. Sr. Irma is the director of Muscatine Center for Social Action. Through her dedicated service and leadership, MCSA has achieved stability, identified its mission and role in our community, and is reaching out to the needs of children as well as adults. MCSA is making a difference in the lives of countless people, thanks to the dedication of Sr. Irma. Paul Carroll overcame a serious injury in a motor vehicle accident to serve the needs of the developmentally disabled and chronically mentally ill of Muscatine. Paul serves on multiple boards of directors and has been instrumental in the rescue of the county farm barn, the log cabin at Weed Park, the Weed Park Bandstand, as well as many initiatives such as the formation of the Financial Literacy Coalition, the the Agricultural Learning Center, the Flickenger Learning Center, and the Barn Quilts program. Frank Kelly is the Executive Director of the Community Foundation and has been instrumental in its microgranting program, national accreditation, qualification by the Iowa Department of Economic Development, securing County Endowment money, placing it on a secure financial footing, and initiating its operational advances. TODAY'S PROGRAM:
Bruce Carter of the Quad City Metropolitan Airport Authority will tell us about aviation advances in our area.
UPCOMING ROTARY PROGRAMS
September 24 Max Churchill will be the guest speaker. He will be talking about the High Bridge Commission and plans to show some pictures of its construction.
LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM:
Bill Aossey talked to us about Americans and the Muslim faith. Bill is a businessman born in Cedar Rapids. His family immigrated to Iowa from the old Ottoman Empire in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. They started a food business that serves national and international markets. He talked to us about the rich and constructive heritage of Islam in America and the dilemma many Muslims face as they are confronted by questions that would stump most Christians about the role of their faiths in terms of patriotism.
