Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. They can be in a single school or several schools within a community.  Muscatine High School has had an Interact Club for several years.  There are over 10,000 Rotary Interact Clubs in existence.  To learn more visit the Rotary Interact page.

August 30th Program

Erika Kate Foundation by Traci and Rich Maynard

Rich Maynard is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) in Muscatine.  He shared the emotional story of his daughter, Erika Kate, who was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy and secondary pulmonary hypertension, a severe form of heart and lung disease at the age of 3 1/2.   Through their own experience they were struck by the fact that there are little or no resources to help families of children facing cardiac problems.  Due to this, he and his wife Traci set up the Erika Kate Foundation.

EKF is a grass roots effort to develop a national assistance program benefitting families of children with life-threatening heart disease. They provide short-term emotional, spiritual, and financial assistance to families currently in the midst of a heart related medical crisis involving their child. EKF supplements local and regional programs already in place around children's hospitals throughout the country and works to stand in the gap on behalf of families whose short-term needs exceed available resources.  The Erika Kate Foundation is a non-profit corporation organized under the Revised Iowa Nonprofit Corporation Act. The Foundation is recognized as a tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  As of March 2010, EKF is further classified as a Private Operating Foundation.

To find out more about their story, the foundation, and how you can help, please visit their webpage at www.erikakate.org .

In recognition of today's presentation, the Muscatine Rotary Club will donate a children's book to the Musser public library with the Maynard's names inscribed in the front of the book.
