In Case You Missed It

Last week Dawn Stineman, from Unity Hospital, presented information about Breast Cancer.

October is National Breast Awareness month. Breast cancer occurs in both men and women.   2,000 men and 180,000 women will be diagnosed this year.  Dawn stressed the importance of for early detection and encouraged us to develop a "circle of caring" with sisters, mothers, wives, and friends to encourage each other to get annual mammograms after age 40.  She also shared that grants are available from the Susan G. Komen and Iowa Cervical Foundation to cover the cost of mammograms for uninsured or those who do not have resources to cover the cost.  Dawn also recommended eating lots of fruits, vegetables, exercising and reducing alcohol consumption as potential methods of prevention.

Dawn introduced Dr. Fidge, Unity Hospital Radiologist, who discussed advances in mammogram technology and the advantages of full field digital mammograms now being used at Unity.  Medical testing is underway at Mayo which would detect cells as small as 1.5 mm in dimension vs. 5 or 6 mm.  Expect to see exciting advances in the near future!
