Rotary Program:  Shane Orr introduced Anna Goodman and Kent Ferris to share the NAMI story. The National Alliance for Mental Health, a grass roots organization started as a support group to help families and individuals with Mental Health diseases.  Anna pointed out that Mental Illness is a disease of the brain which is malfunctioning.  Anna sited 10 warning signs for Mental Illness including:  inability to cope, strange and grandiose feelings, difficulty eating or sleeping and extreme emotional highs and lows.  Mental illness affects 5.2 million persons every year and is prevalent in 26% of the homeless population.  Anna shared a plethora of programs available to support individuals and their families including Family to Family, Peer to Peer, In Our Own Voice etc.

Vicki Walters is a Muscatine Advocate for NAMI.  Information is available in the community but specifically at the Emergency Room at Trinity.  Persons interested in volunteering should contact the NAMI Office.  Materials were placed on each table for Rotarians to take and or share.
