THE BIG STORY
Gary Carlson, on behalf of Muscatine Rotary, handed over a
$900
check to the Friends of the Mill to help pay for an important part of its promotion and development.
THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
Judy Jeffrey, Director of the Iowa Department of Education will provide an update on educational issues in the State of Iowa.
LAST WEEK'S
PROGRAM
Troy Dannen, Executive Director of the Iowa High School Girl's Athletic Union talked about the role of the Union and an update on girl's activities in the State of Iowa. More importantly, though, Troy had some insight in the role of athletics in the development of young athletes --- the way it helps prevent dropout, how it stimulates academic performance and helps to keep young people out of trouble. There were two other very important issues he talked about:
1. Parents who goad their children into excelling in sports with the hopes of finding an athletic scholarship are nuts. More money --- much more money --- comes from academic scholarships. Moms and Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas should be taking their kids to math and science camps in the summer instead of volleyball camp.
2. School consolidations --- and there will be a lot of them in the next ten years --- will reduce the opportunities for girls to participate in sports and derive the behavioral benefits of athletics. This is an important point to consider.

Stan Howe is still benched. He has a blood clot now. Kip Fisher has his phone number (he's out of town) if you want to give him a call.
HAPPY NEWS
Marilyn Smith is pretty happy that son Peter is now a bona fide professor. This means more money for him and the chance of extravagant gifts at Christmastime for her.
Terry Mitchell is proud that Raymond (you probably still call it Prime-Mover) has received a Toyota Excellence award. This is big news because Raymond makes A LOT of Toyota's (its parent company) narrow aisle material handling equipment.
Kip Fisher is all worked up about Iowa State Women - one point but that's all you need.
Melanie Alexander is glad to have Easter behind her. She and other members of the Young Professionals Network hid a couple of thousand eggs for an Easter Egg Hunt.
Frank Kelly was relieved that Sarah Lande skipped the meeting. He botched an item about her in the bulletin.
David Stanley was happy to tell the group about wrestling. Keep handing over that money, David. We're glad when you're glad.
