Program: Dr. Trudy Burns provided a very thorough overview of the Muscatine Heart Study. Her focus was on the progression of obesity within Muscatine Middle School students, and in particular the measurement of cardiovascular risk factors in school children. The study has been going on since 1970 with over 23,000 Muscatine residents participating.

  • Since 1970 there has been a steady increase in the proportion of Muscatine Middle School students who are overweight and a dramatic increase in the proportion who are obese.
  • The obesity evidence will likely lead to the onset of heart disease at a earlier age.
  • Body size alone does not allow for identifying those at highest rish of premature atherosclerosis.
