Program: Sheree Hoegerl Donor Resources Consultant for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center was introduced by Bob Allbee.  Our region used 50,000 units of blood last year. Donations can touch as many as 4 persons. Blood products are needed now more than ever before.  Platelets are used by cancer patients and stay on the shelf less than 5 days, while red cells stay on the shelf 13 days.  99% of what is collected is transfused.  There are misnomers about who can donate blood.  Just about everyone can which is a change.  However, if you lived in Europe from 1980 through 1996 you cannot!!  The average age of a donor is 55.

In the summer blood is needed more than normal due to 3 big holidays of Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day!!  The Muscatine Donor Center is now located right next to HyVee.  Donating blood is often used as a simple but great service project!!  Next Monday, the Blood Center will be working with MHS Key Club at MCSA for a blood drive on Monday!!
