Rotary News: Rotary Service Project...4th of July... Janet Morrow is seeking help with the 4th of July parade. If you can help talk to Janet!!  Charlie Lewis read a brief obituary of Ken Daniels a former Muscatine resident and Rotarian.  Cards can be sent to Jim Sturms who is having some health issues currently.  The new member orientation is Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the McAvoy Center at 6:00 pm. Questions regarding membership can be referred to Chair, Erika Cox.

Happy News: Mary Odell is happy that Tim and his wife are here for a couple week visit. Shane Orr is happy that the United Way and Faith United Church of Christ are packaging food for 300 meals at .25 per meal.  He also asked for Rotarian participation in the Community Needs Assessment. Ron Yohe has started a new online company called quickstartpublications.com. Mike Ruby had a fabulous time in New Zealand and Australia. Judi Holdorf is proud that the Community Foundation is 15 years old and a celebration is being held on June 19th as a kickoff. See Judi if you want to attend. Lucas is concluding his Rotary time in America by traveling across country with other Rotary Exchange students. Steve Jameson is happy for Lucas and reminded us to participate in Car Raffle for 4th of July!

Blue Zone Update: Joni Axel gave an update on the Blue Zone progress and told us that our final audit visit will be mid June for the Muscatine Wellmark Project.  Much has been accomplished this past year thanks to Joni's team and our great community!!  Go Muscatine....Blue Zones!!

Program: Bob Allbee introduced author Mike Edmonds who shared an impactful message on eating healthy and reviewed chapters from his book.  Highlights of his presentation include:

  • Eating protein helps control appetite.
  • We should read food labels.
  • Watch our sodium intake.
  • Potassium negates high sodium foods.
  • We need adequate calcium in our diet.
  • We need 3 meals  that are balanced daily.  Eat Breakfast!!
  • Portion Control
  • Exercise
  • 2 out of every 3 Americans are overweight.
  • His book includes how to, the why and recipes!
