Announcements

No meeting on July 5th.

 

Mary announced the new members in the 2009-2010 year and thanked all the Board Members and Committees for their hard work during the past year.

 

Tony Joseph presented a banner on behalf of the Sunrise Club in Belize City.   John Schwandke attended a meeting there about the water project where he received the banner for our club.

 

Paul Harris Fellowship Award - Gregs Thomopulos presented a five sapphire pin to Dick Stanley.  

 

 

Tom Ward talked about the International Convention.  He said he had a great experience and is proud to be a Rotarian.

 

David Stanley put money in 12 years ago for he and Jeanie's 50th Anniversary.  It is their anniversary again and he is putting money in again for her continued patience.  He also was pleased to report that his prostate repair was successful and urged the males in our group to have regular checkups. 

 

Program - Muscatine Community College . Our Pride

Jeff Armstrong, President of Muscatine Community College, presented a PowerPoint of MCC highlights.  Before starting he introduced Gail Spies, Dean of College; Shelly Cram-Ralph, Dean of Students; Katie Watson, Admissions and Chief Recruiter; and  Marv Smith, Director of Business and Industry Center and Continuing Education. 

 

Some of the topics Jeff touched on were:

 

MCC just completed its 80th academic year.   

  • 2423 credit students
  • 1128 MHS students
  • 8000+  Non-credit students (one day workshops, etc.)
  • 185 Graduates
  • 55 GED graduates
  • MCC lowest graduation rate in Iowa- a lot of students come with no intention of earning degree but rather transferring on to another institution
  • Last year they had record enrollment - Enrolled 450 HS students; Student housing 100%
  • $300,000 scholarships
  • Dedication of McAvoy University Center
  • New Science Wing -open house will be 8/27
  • Received Salvation Army and United Way Awards
  • Accomplished 10th Diversity Day; Art of Gardening; Senior Health Fair; Rene Britt - EICCD Chancellors Award; Steve Holland - Finalist for best on line instructor ICCOC; Phi theta kappa gold and silver coca cola scholars; Post secondary Ag students - 2 first places; Softball team ranked 20th in Country; Operation Green; Butterfly garden recognized by national wildlife federation.

 

Goals for the future:

  • Increase number of students graduating
  • Improve communication - internal/external
  • Increase number of professional development opportunities to MCC faculty and the community
  • Increase food service options to students both day and night
  • Increase number of out of district, out of state, and international students
  • Provide consistent method for in class feedback
  • Increase use of classroom based technologies
  • Increase student focused extracurricular activities
  • Create a network of high school academy programs associated with centers in Wilton, West Liberty, and Columbus
  • Develop short term lab science tech program
  • Alternative delivery class options
  • Improve methods for mental health counseling on campus
  • Build a performing arts space on campus
  • Build student activities center which supports both intercollegiate athletics and student wellness
  • Develop Entrepreneurship Center
  • Develop more mom based programs in Wilton, West Liberty, and Columbus
