THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Dave Moritz - Muscatine Boat Show "That Was Then, This is Now."

LAST WEEK'S
John Beckey, president of the Muscatine Welfare Association gave us an update on their projects. Jim Trosen was with him, but did not speak, except to answer a few questions. MWA started in the 1920s. Most of its organizers were people who have been honored by the city naming streets after them. Today, much of MWAs work revolves around housing for people with disabilities. Their big project these days is the completion of Harmony Place, a home for the medically fragile. Other enterprises of MWA include the domestic violence shelter, the Magness Trust properties (homes for elderly men), Fulton Place, and other residences.
UPCOMING ROTARY PROGRAMS
Tom Williams is chair for March.
March 3 - Two recipients of the Stanley Explorer Awards will provide information on their educational trips taken last summer. Rachelle Schneider, an ESL teacher at Madison Elementary School who visited Africa, and Kathy Haltmeyer, a special education teacher at MHS who studied in Italy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Katrien Pairoux from Belgium told us about an upcoming performance by "Up With People," an organization of young performers who are coming to Muscatine, courtesy of HNI. They will perform on February 26 and need people to provide 110 beds for performers to sleep in while they are in town (Feb 24th - 27th) for their four-part program (international participation; global travel; community impact; and education). If you have a spare bedroom or two and would like to host some utterly charming young people, contact Katrien at  563-272-7222 or email her at kpairoux@upwithpeople.org - you can learn more at www.upwithpeople.org which is their web site.

TODAY'S ROTARY MOMENT
In 1949-50, Rotary International President, Percy Hodgson, established four objectives for his team and launched the Rotary tradition of an annual theme. Since then the annual themes have varied in length and message but all have inspired Rotarians to greater action.
SHAKEDOWN NETS MONEY FOR CLUB
Karen asked who was and was NOT wearing their Rotary Pin.  She collected a little from almost every table.  Good job, Karen!
NOT A SINGLE BIT OF HAPPY NEWS
We sat there like bumps on a stump when Karen asked for happy news.
BRIGHTENERS
My mind works like lightning. One brilliant flash and it is gone.
The only time the world beats a path to your door is if you're in the bathroom.
