Types of scams that are making headlines-
Grandparent Scams – also known as the ‘emergency scam’. Fraudsters will pose as a grandchild who is ‘in trouble’.
The Prize Scam
Victim receives a phone call or email saying they’ve won a substantial prize.
Usually targets those that are on a fixed income or are facing financial struggles.
The Fake Check Scam
This involves sending counterfeit checks to a victim, with instructions to deposit the check and then wire a portion of the funds back to the sender.
Ways to protect yourself and your family:
- Communicate with family members about potential scams.
- Privacy settings – advise or assist family to review their privacy settings on social media platforms and limit the amount of personal info that is shared online.
- Verification – instruct family members to verify the identity of the callers or information before taking action.
- Financial awareness – remind family to be cautious when sharing financial information and avoid sending money to unknown individuals, especially through wire transfers or gift cards.
- Reporting – encourage family to report suspicious calls or emails to the appropriate authorities.
