The first RABRAI was August 26-31, 1973, and started as a challenge between Des Moines Register copy editor John Karras and columnist Donald Kaul. Karras challenged Kaul to ride his bicycle across Iowa and write columns about what he saw from that perspective. RAGBRAI, Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. It is the world's oldest, largest, and longest multi-day bicycle touring event. This year’s ride is July 22nd- 29th. Muscatine is the meeting site before the final dip in Davenport. In commemorating the ride’s 50th anniversary, ride coordinators expect record crowds.
The planning committee is made up of 5 members on the core committee and four pods focusing on marketing, safety, logistics, and entertainment. Rotary has been asked to assist with traffic control to help save costs. Please sign up at https://tinyurl.com/MuscatineRAGBRAI23.

Dear Polio Eradication Warriors,
Some of you added to this week's Polio Eradication Update are nice people I met in Melbourne in or around the Rotary International Convention a couple of weeks ago. If you don't care to receive my weekly Update (now or at a later date), just let me know and I'll take you off of the list right away. Best Wishes, Terry Ziegler
No new Wild Polio cases reported this week. We are now 4 weeks since the most recent reported Wild Polio Case - on 5/16/23 in Afghanistan. See today's attached report.
What is that Polio Picture? It takes a lot of effort to reach every child! Nearly 40 years ago, Rotary International embarked on an admirable journey – to rid the world of polio. Remarkable progress has been made since then as cases have drastically declined (by 99.9%), and the lessons learned from these successes are now being applied to strengthen the response to other public health emergencies, such as malaria. By leveraging longstanding relationships with community leaders and innovative tools used to fight polio, Rotary is showing the world that dreams to deliver healthier futures for children everywhere can be made a reality.
Did You Know? 67 million of the world's children missed out entirely or partially on routine immunizations between 2019 and 2021. "The State of the World’s Children 2023," a report released by UNICEF in April, highlights the immense impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on childhood immunization. Between 2019 and 2021, the world lost more than 10 years of progress on routine immunizations. One in five children worldwide is now unvaccinated or undervaccinated. This must stop!
