Program: Update on Muscatine Levee System
Muscatine Levee is 14.2 Miles long protecting 30,000 acres, and over $374M in assets. In 2013 Levee breach study was completed with US Corps of Engineers to evaluate public safety and response time. Finding out how long would it take us to evacuate in the case of a breach. Results found it would be 7 hours to 8 days to be overrun by at least an inch of water creating a major impact on the community but also water supply, electricity. Frequency of historic crest events is increasing with 80% of historic floods occurring since 2000 and 60% of historic floods occurring since 2010.
Goals and Objectives of the Levee Improvement Project -Reduce risk of overtopping -Consistent flood protection – promote and support economic and industrial growth – Reduce the threat of major environmental catastrophe in the event of the lease- Minimum damage to property owners. Additional concerns for business continuity: Long Term Seepage Issues, Age of Pumps, Well Field protection, water treatment plant. Improvement plan will be a phased project in 4 parts.
