Program: Dick Stanley introduced Mel Duncan a founder of the NonViolent Peace Force Organization.  Mel grew up in Davenport.  He gave a very informative talk on creating peace without guns.  Many Rotarians and Rotary Fellows have been involved and some trained in the process. Most conflicts in the world are premised on land, water or resource shortages.  Mel gave three examples of protection and conflict resolution:  Proactive Accompaniement, Proactive Presence, Inter-positioning and additionally Compliance Monitoring.  The reasons these strategies work is because they are based on deterrence, encouragement and open communication through the chain of  command from the decisionmakers to the local folks.  Conflict is usually centered on civilians who are caught in the conflict.

Rotarians can help in the following ways:  get trained in the process, sponsor Peace Fellows, engage with our political candidates about nonviolent methods.  www.nonviolentpeaceforce.org.
