Presentation-
Sara Weisbeck: Prevention Coordinator, Robert Young
The prevention department within the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Division at the Robert Young Center focuses on education and awareness to help mitigate addictive behaviors before they begin. Prevention efforts center on three key areas: smoking cessation, substance abuse prevention, and gambling addiction support through a partnership with Scott County. The department is relocating to the Robert Young Behavioral Health building to provide more wraparound care and centralized support services under one roof.
Prevention programming also extends into local schools, where initiatives help students develop healthy coping alternatives and resist vaping. In partnership with students in West Liberty, a “coping cart” was created with items such as mints, toothpicks, and supportive stickers to offer alternatives to vaping. Peer-led education continues to play an important role in helping students understand that many of their classmates are choosing not to vape. Additional resources, including Your Life Iowa, are available to connect individuals with support, education, and prevention services.
